But taking screwdriver to camera isn’t a wise idea if you want to keep you gear functioning with a valid warranty. Thankfully, the folks at iFixit help satisfy our curiosity with their disassembly guides. So let’s enjoy a look under the hood of the Fujifilm X-M1 – from a safe distance, shall we?

Best Non-Destructive Editing Software for Photography

With so many editing / post-processing software packages on the market today, photographers might find it rather difficult to go through them all and compare key features in order to pick something that would ultimately work for their needs. Many of us go through that stage, especially when starting out. What is the best software for photo editing? What features does it have? Is it easy to learn and how much does it cost? These are just some of the questions photographers seek answers for. While John Bosley and I have been working hard on producing our PL Level 1: Post-Processing Basics course, we have decided to share one of the charts that we will be including in the course with our readers, which compares the most popular non-destructive editing tools on the market. It took us a while to compile all this data, since there are so many different features and considerations one must go through to make a meaningful comparison. The chart has not been fully finalized yet, since we are currently looking for your feedback and ideas, so that we can hopefully make the chart complete and comprehensive enough for those who are interested in such a comparison.

We picked the following six software packages that offer non-destructive editing based on their popularity among photographers: Adobe Lightroom 6 / CC 2015, Capture One Pro 9, ACDSee Pro 9, On1 Photo 10, DxO Optics Pro 10 and Photo Ninja 1.3.3c. We recognize that there are many more out there, but we cannot include them all, since such research would take a lot more time and the chart would get massive, making it hard to read. If you disagree with our choices and would like to see other non-destructive software included, please let us know in the comments section below (note that we will be posting a separate article for complex / destructive editing tools such as Adobe Photoshop, Elements, Affinity Photo, PaintShop Pro and GIMP). To come up with all the data below, we had to install every software package on a single machine and run them all for some time, going through and testing out the features. It was a pretty exhausting task to say the least! Below is the software comparison table:

Please note that we did not list every possible feature and slider offered by each individual software package, as it would make the above chart unreadable. Instead, we decided to focus on the key / most important features and include additional data for consideration, such as Stability, Performance, Learning Curve and Update Frequency. Some of this data such as Stability and Learning Curve is rather subjective – it is based on my experience running the software, which might differ from other people’s experiences. So if you disagree, please let us know in the comments section below!

Based on the above chart, it is pretty clear that Lightroom, Capture One Pro and ACDSee Pro tightly compete with each other, while the others still have a lot of catching up to do. I personally use Lightroom and ACDsee Pro 9 quite a bit, but after testing out Capture One Pro, I realized that it is one heck of a tool that is absolutely worth looking into in more detail. Some of the features that Capture One Pro has are light years ahead of Lightroom – advanced color adjustments for example, which allow making selective changes to particular colors in an image, are simply amazing compared to the Hue/Saturation/Luminance (HSL) adjustments in Lightroom, which affect colors globally. Capture One Pro’s masking tools also completely slaughter the slow and buggy masking capabilities of Lightroom. And let’s not even bring up Layers, which Lightroom has never had. While many Lightroom users have to use Photoshop for things they cannot do in Lightroom alone, I can see how one could solely rely on Capture One Pro for editing, especially for portrait photography. However, it is not perfect – unlike Lightroom, Capture One Pro is not designed to be a full-featured catalog with built-in file organization / advanced file management tools. Its interface is a bit busy and some things take harder and longer to achieve when compared to Lightroom, making it a bit difficult to use and get used to, at least from the perspective of a long-time Lightroom user. Lastly, its biggest deterrent is the steep price – at $ 299, it is the most expensive of the bunch.

It was surprising to see how well ACDSee Pro compared to both Lightroom and Capture One Pro in terms of features. However, its rather buggy interface and constant annoying notifications might not be something many of us would want to deal with. Also, when looking at straight RAW to JPEG conversions with camera profiles applied, images from ACDSee Pro looked a bit worse compared to those from Lightroom and Capture One Pro. Other than that, if one spends enough time in ACDSee Pro, one can get great results as well, especially considering how many built-in tools are available in the software.

DxO Optics Pro feels a bit out of place here, since it is designed to be more of a plugin for Lightroom and not its direct competitor. However, considering that the latest version has quite a few RAW editing tools, some of which work much better than the ones in Lightroom, I decided to include it in the list. It does not have a lot of the features that other software packages do, but its Lens Correction capabilities are far better than anything else out there and one could spend much less time compared to other software to make images look great. Tools such as PRIME noise reduction give superb results straight out of software, with little need to tweak the output. However, with DxO continuing to refuse to deal with Fuji X-Trans RAW files, it is not something I could fully rely on, since I use Fuji cameras quite a bit, including my Fuji X-T1.

One of the most interesting tests was the Speed / Performance benchmark. For this one, we selected a group of 25 DNG and 25 random RAW images from different cameras. We timed how long it would take for each software to extract full-size JPEG images in 100% quality from both batches of files. The tests had to be repeated 3 times to make sure that there were no other factors involved and the numbers were then averaged into a single number. As you can see, each tool varies in performance greatly and the clear winner here is Adobe Lightroom, which generally outperformed pretty much all other software, with the exception of ACDSee Pro 9, which did a bit better in extracting RAW images. For a professional who needs to extract thousands of images quickly, the winner is clear here. However, performance is not going to be the primary criterion for many photographers, so one must look at all of the above to decide what is more important for their needs.

Using Color to Create Strong Photo Compositions

Color is one of the most obvious elements of composition. Everyone knows that intense colors make people take notice of your images. Ever wonder why there are so many sunset and flower shots? Color is the reason.

Color has a couple of functions in photographs. First, color grabs the attention of the viewer. Perhaps, because this function of color is so palpable, many photographers miss the more sophisticated, and in some cases far more powerful, function of color: color sets the mood of an image. Since color is such an important compositional ingredient, the experienced photographer will want to use color to its fullest extend — incorporating both functions of color into images.

Grabbing the Viewer’s Attention

Utilizing color to grab attention is often rather straight forward. Generally, what is required is a saturated or intense color. This type of color tends to grab the viewer’s attention and focus it on the area of color. Furthermore, the color tends to keep the viewer’s attention for an extended period of time. When the viewer’s eyes do wander, the color tends to bring the attention back.

There are a couple of primary ways to use color to grab a viewer’s attention. The first way is to use very saturated, bold colors. An example of this approach would be a dramatic sunset. The second way of using color to grab a viewer’s attention is to use a mix of contrasting colors. An example of this approach would be an image of fall colors where there is a combination of red, orange, and yellow leaves.

Mood

Setting the mood through the use of color tends to be a more subtle application of color than when color is used to grab the attention. However, that does not mean that it is any less powerful.

Different colors elicit different moods. Since there are a huge number of colors, it is not possible to cover all of the colors and their impacts on viewers’ moods in an article such as this one. Instead, a few colors will be reviewed in an effort to convey how colors affect viewers’ feelings.

Blue

Blue tends to bring forth feelings of calm or cold depending on how the color is used. This is a reflection of how we perceive the color in nature: the deep calm ocean is blue, peaceful cloudless skies are blue, and large amounts of ice have a blue tint. Therefore, a photographer that wishes to create a feeling of calm in an image should include blue objects in the image such as a peaceful blue stream or a blue lake.

Green

Green often communicates a feeling of lushness and freshness. Again, our feelings about this color are tied up with how we frequently experience that color in nature. We tend to associate green with spring and new growth. Green is frequently used in landscape photography. Green meadows, plants, and fields can be used to convey the mood of a flourishing scene.

Yellow, Orange, and Red

The last colors to be evaluated are the warm tones: yellow, orange, and red. These colors are associated with feelings of warmth and comfort (again the colors are tied to how we experience them in nature). Sunsets are a perfect example of how these warm colors create a comfortable feeling. Photographers that wish to take advantage of these colors can include, in their photographs, objects such as flowers, plants, food, and rocks that contain these colors.

Light

So far, we have looked at using color to create mood in photographs by means of including objects, with the appropriate colors, in an image. However, there is another way to use color to create mood in an image – the use of light. Early morning and evening provide a photographer with colored light which can be used to powerful effect in images. Before sunrise and about twenty minutes after sunset, everything is bathed in a soft blue light. This light can be used to create a calm mood such as an early morning shot of a beach bathed in the cool, blue light.

Just after sunrise and before sunset, the light is often very warm with red, orange, or yellow hues. This light can be used to create feelings of comfort such as a beautiful mountain peak bathed in a soft, warm, golden light.

Summary

When properly utilized, color can be one of the most effective methods of conveying mood in an image.

Better Photos in 6 Simple Steps

The bottom line with any photography learning experience is figuring out how to take great images. That is the result all of us are looking for. If we aren’t actually taking great photos then what’s the point of learning? By putting into practice some simple steps, your photography will improve immediately.

I remember searching the Internet looking for keys that would help me to get to the next level with my photography. When I found a key, it was very exciting. I was already a proficient photographer, but it would have been great to find an article with keys to get me to the next level. So based on my experience here are steps that will take you to the next level.

1. Get in Closer

So many amateur photographers think that a zoom lens is the ultimate accessory for their camera. That’s a total misnomer. The most important accessory to any photographer is their feet. Unless you’re in a game park or zoo where getting closer to the animals may get you eaten, using your feet is essential. You will see more of the subject and the image will probably be of a better quality. As you move in toward the subject you’ll find yourself framing the scene or person with far more attention to the details.

2. Exclude Clutter

By getting in closer you will probably exclude a bunch of clutter that you’d not usually remove from your images. There is a bunch of stuff in any scene that you will not want to see in a few years time when looking at the memories. Coke cans, microwaves, and the kitchen sink—all elements that were not important to you when you shot the image. By carefully looking at the scene you will find things that shouldn’t be there. Remove them or change your viewpoint so that they are no longer in the image.

3. Watch the Edges of Your Frame

By giving careful consideration to the whole image—especially the edges—you will see a significant improvement to your photos. Because we are so focused on the child, vehicle, or other chosen subject, which on most occasions is placed in the center of the image (not good), we don’t give attention to the edges. It’s only after the shoot that we ask the question, why did I include the extraneous items that really have no relevance to the image? So watch what encroaches on your scene before pressing the shutter button.

4. Choose a Clear Focal Point or Subject

The most important element of any image is the focal point or subject. This is the reason you are taking the image. If you are photographing your child’s birthday party then make him or her the focal point. Get in closer so the viewer can see what the photo is all about. The subject should always shout out, “I am the center of attention.” You should never be in doubt as to what or who the subject is.

5. Change Your Angle

By simply doing this one step you will see an immediate improvement to your photos. Start by thinking outside the box. Don’t stand in front of the subject. Walk around and look at the possibilities. Get down low and look up at the subject. Move a few steps to your left or right. Climb up higher than the subject and look down. Whatever you do don’t stand in front of the subject. Think differently.

6. Practice, Practice, Practice

Huh? You may think, “This isn’t something I can do to improve my photos.” Yup, it sure is! By going out and practicing the first five steps regularly and consistently you are going to become an above average photographer. In any activity or hobby, the more you practice the better you become. So get out and shoot images—lots of them—while thinking about the other five steps.

Here’s a little bonus exercise. Take an object or subject and shoot it in 100 different ways. Sound difficult? It sure is. But when you have exhausted all your ideas and have only taken 71 images, take a look at them and you will find that there are several that are really great that you wouldn’t have shot if you had only taken 5 or 10. Happy shooting!

Advanced Post-Processing Tips: Three-Step Sharpening

Sharpening remains a particularly confusing topic among photographers, especially given the tremendous number of post-processing options available. Some post-processing software has so many options that it is hard to know where to start; others do not let you use optimal methods in the first place. If you are trying to use the best sharpening settings – including the lowest possible levels of noise and other artifacts – the ideal method is three-step sharpening.

Note: No matter the scene you photograph, you shouldn’t do any sharpening until you have made all your edits already! In other words, sharpening should be your final adjustment before making a print. (With Lightroom, and some other non-destructive post-processing software, this does not apply. Unlike many programs, the order of your Lightroom adjustments has no effect whatsoever on the final image. As an example, cropping and then adding a vignette in Lightroom produces the same effect as adding a vignette and then cropping.)

Also, before I cover three-step sharpening, remember that it is impossible to restore detail that your equipment did not capture in the first place. Sharpening is nothing more than increasing the local contrast of details you already captured. Still, it is an important part of post-production, particularly if you are making prints.

1) Step One: Deconvolution Sharpening

The first, fundamental type of sharpening is called deconvolution or capture sharpening. This, essentially, is how you undo the inherent softness of a photograph – softness caused by factors that are impossible to counteract in the field, such as the low-pass (anti-aliasing) filter in many cameras. Even if your camera doesn’t have a low-pass filter, like my D800e, deconvolution sharpening is still necessary.

Essentially, you can think of deconvolution sharpening as a faint grain applied across the entire image. This adjustment is not strong at all; it simply lays the groundwork for more extensive sharpening later.

To use deconvolution sharpening in practice, the most important point is to maintain restraint. This type of sharpening applies equally across every part of a photograph, including areas without any detail. If your settings are too aggressive, you may end up adding noise, grain, and other artifacts to low-detail areas of your photo.

In Practice

So, which deconvolution settings are ideal? That varies from photo to photo, as well the specific software you use. With Lightroom, deconvolution sharpening is very easy to apply. Set the radius as small as possible (0.5 pixels), the detail as high as possible (100) and the masking as low as possible (0). Then, adjust the sharpness value so that the amount of grain in low-detail areas is tolerable. For my D800e, this is typically between 20 and 40, depending upon the image. Photos that are filled completely with details (as in, no clouds or out-of-focus areas) will let you increase the sharpening value more than images with low-detail regions.

If you use Photoshop, I recommend doing the same adjustments in Camera Raw. However, if you prefer working within the main Photoshop workspace, you can do similar adjustments via the smart sharpen tool (among many, many others).

Pay attention to the areas without detail more than the areas with detail for deconvolution sharpening. Don’t be hesitant to increase the “sharpening” slider, but be careful not to add any unwanted grain or noise.

Also, if you are working in a program like Lightroom or Camera Raw, it is fine to do some noise reduction in this stage. For most programs, though, it is best to do noise reduction before you do any sharpening at all. (As mentioned in the introduction to this article, the order that you apply Lightroom adjustments doesn’t matter.)

Lastly, I recommend sharpening at 100% magnification, which maps a single pixel of your image to a single pixel of your display. If you must zoom in further to see your changes clearly, 200% and 400% also are acceptable; however, don’t zoom in to any unusual value, whatever software you use (i.e., a value of 90% or 234% is far from ideal). This also holds true for the next step, local sharpening.

2) Step Two: Local Sharpening

The most important sharpening step is local or creative sharpening. Here, you are sharpening only areas that already have high levels of detail. The point of local sharpening is to increase the clarity of important areas, yet avoid adding unwanted noise and grain to low-detail regions.

Say, for example, that you are photographing a portrait. After you apply a light deconvolution sharpening across the entire image, you are ready to target more specific details. You might want to sharpen a model’s eyes, for example, without also sharpening the background. That’s local sharpening.

In Practice

There are countless ways to put local sharpening into practice. I could write a full article on each of Photoshop’s sharpening tools, including ones that aren’t obvious at first, and it still wouldn’t be comprehensive. For now, I’ll only list a couple for simplicity’s sake.

First, if necessary, you could just stay in Lightroom for all your local adjustments. Although there aren’t nearly as many options – in fact, the local sharpening tool only has a single slider – there are other benefits to doing all your edits in Lightroom. For one, Lightroom is non-destructive, meaning that you can re-adjust all your old edits at any time. Also, RAW files in Lightroom are smaller than TIFFs exported from Photoshop.

If you do choose to work in Photoshop, be sure to use layers and masking. I will write a tutorial on masking soon, but the basic premise is that masks let you apply an adjustment – like sharpening – to specific parts of a photo rather than the entire image.

When I use Photoshop, one of my preferred tools is Smart Sharpen. To do local sharpening in Photoshop, my workflow may look like this:

  1. Open the photo in Photoshop.
  2. Duplicate the layer.
  3. Apply Smart Sharpen to the top layer at the strongest setting that I might need.
  4. Add a white mask to the top layer.
  5. Decrease the amount of sharpening in low-detail regions by painting gray or black onto the mask.
  6. Flatten the layers and save the image.

Other programs with layers would be similar. If you don’t have Photoshop, consider using Nik’s free Sharpener Pro 3. (All of the Nik Suite is free.)

3) Step Three: Output Sharpening

The final adjustment is output sharpening, which depends upon the specific material that you are using for a print. Output sharpening is simply the additional sharpening that you apply to counteract high levels of texture in a print.

Consider a canvas, aluminum, or matte print, for example. If you don’t add any additional sharpening, your photograph will be blurry simply because of the material you use! This isn’t as much of a problem with low-texture papers – say, glossy or metallic.

Even photographs intended for the web need some output sharpening. Every time that you downscale an image, your software needs to interpolate pixels and bin them together. In the process, you may lose detail; the best way to counteract this is to add a bit of extra sharpening

In Practice

Usually, output sharpening is very easy to apply, since it is built into many programs already. Take a look at this screenshot from Lightroom, for example:

Export Sharpening

As you can see, Lightroom has built-in algorithms for output sharpening, which means you don’t need to do any of this manually! Simply export your photo from Lightroom, choosing the proper strength for whatever material you are using.

This may take some trial and error, and it does depend upon your print size as well as the material. Personally, for example, I prefer the “low” sharpening for large prints on glossy paper, but I use “standard” sharpening for web when I export to Photography Life. When in doubt, go for lower sharpening – it is easier to ruin a photo if your edits are too aggressive.

Also, if you are creating a print that is particularly important, you may not want to let Lightroom’s automatic software take over. Instead, consider adjusting the sharpness manually, either in Lightroom or Photoshop. I don’t do this for most images, but it may be necessary for certain, specialty prints (such as very small prints on canvas, which require stronger sharpening adjustments than any of Lightroom’s normal export presets allow).

Lastly, if you don’t want to use Lightroom, the free Nik Sharpener Pro 3 has an output sharpening tool that allows for more precise adjustments. I have never been unhappy with Lightroom’s export sharpening, but certainly some photographers will want more control.

4) When Does This Matter?

The three-step sharpening method is the ideal way to sharpen a photograph, no matter your subject. However, it is more important – as you may expect – if there are large areas without detail in a photograph.

Typically, the one-step sharpening method that many people use in Lightroom (or perhaps two-step if they also do output sharpening) is simply to adjust the sliders until the photo looks as good as possible. However, if parts of the photo are more detailed than others, you can’t expect great results from applying the same amount of adjustment to the entire image.

The masking tool in Lightroom and other software aims to fix this, and it does a decent job. However, it inevitably isn’t perfect. If your masking is too strong, details in the photo will look “crunchy” and uneven. If your masking is too weak, low-detail areas of your photo will grow too grainy and noisy.

Three-step sharpening is useful for landscape photographers, although not to the same degree. If I have clouds in a photo, there still isn’t a better way to avoid adding unwanted noise and artifacts. However, if I’m photographing a scene completely filled with detail (like the image below), I may be able to get away with just two-step sharpening: aggressive deconvolution sharpening, then output sharpening. It all depends upon the image.

Sharpening techniques can be a confusing topic, since there are so many different tools at your disposal. Hopefully, this article covers three-step sharpening in a way that is easy to implement in your own photos, regardless of your specific software.

Will you need to use these techniques for your own photography? It all depends upon your specific situation. If you tend to display photos online more than in person, the techniques in this article are unlikely to make a huge difference. However, if you want the sharpest possible images for a print show or exhibition, three-step sharpening is ideal.

Sony Creating Technology to Allow Blinking Your Eyes to Capture Photographs

Imagine a world where a simple blink will simply freeze time; where the amount of blinks you take are the amount of photos captured. Well Sony is making this possible with their new patent of camera lens contacts. Yes a contact lens that enables us to just blink and captures the moment. The images may be individual still photographs or sequences of images, depending on your blinks. This might be straight out of a movie like “Mission Impossible” or “Minority Report,” but the future seems to be around the corner for this kind of technology.

Fast machines: Shooting motocross with the Nikon D5 and Canon 1D X II

Introduction

Big cameras. Big performance.

The Nikon D5 and Canon EOS-1D X Mark II are purpose-built machines. Firing at 12 and 14 frames per second respectively, they are designed for speed and durability to help you make sure you get the shot no matter what conditions you find yourself in. Conditions like those at the Evergreen Speedway in Monroe, Washington recently, where DPR staffers Dan Bracaglia and Carey Rose went to get some preliminary findings on the cameras’ AF systems.

Bear in mind we’re camera reviewers, and not pro sports photographers – we’re actively working to get the Nikon and Canon cameras into the hands of working pros to get some real-world opinions on them. But for now, we thought there was some value in sending Dan out to get some early findings from the 1D X Mark II, which had arrived only recently into our offices, and Carey out with the D5, the review of which is fully under way. Since these cameras are likely to be shot alongside each other at many a major sporting event, we figured we’d try our best to do the same and compare our results.

For someone as interested in motorcycles as I am, it’s almost embarrassing to admit that this was my first time watching motocross in person, much less photographing it. And even though we were shooting a Sunday ‘practice’ session, it proved a good test for Nikon’s flagship sports shooting machine. As riders brapped and blipped their engines, rocketing around the track at over 40 mph, I snapped and clacked the D5 away at 12 fps nearly the whole time. You just don’t realize how nice all those frames per second are until you really – truly – need them.

But before we get to the burst rate and the photos, let’s dig into the D5’s autofocus system a bit. The continuous autofocus modes I chose to try out were 3D Tracking, single-point, Group Area AF and Auto Area AF. Here’s what all those modes mean, how they behave and some common use cases.

  • 3D Tracking utilizes the D5’s phase-detection autofocus module for distance information and combines that with color readings from the RGB metering sensor to effectively track subjects around the frame with a single point. Put another way, place your chosen AF point over your subject, initiate autofocus, and the point should stick to that subject whether you or your subject move. Frankly, it’s worked so well in my experience that I default to this mode almost all the time for general shooting.
  • Single-point AF utilizes depth tracking from the phase-detection module to effectively track an object that is moving towards or away from the camera, so long as you keep the point over that subject. Despite how good 3D Tracking performs, it can still sometimes be fooled. If you know your subject’s trajectory and can comfortably follow that subject with the AF point over it, this mode also comes with a high degree of precision.
  • Group Area AF works very similarly to the single-point method, but uses a tight group of 5 AF points instead of one. With a larger ‘zone’ of focus coverage, it should be easier to follow unpredictable subjects in this mode, and it’s commonly used for photographing birds in flight.
  • Auto Area AF works basically by letting the camera take over entirely. Like 3D Tracking, this mode uses the camera’s PDAF module and metering sensor in tandem to intelligently discern what it should be focusing on. It will usually bias to objects closer to the camera, so watch your foregrounds, but it should also intelligently be able to read colors, and in Nikon’s newest models, faces and eyes. This is a good mode for photographing people at events, or if you don’t have time to react and just need to get a photograph, there’s a chance Auto Area AF will get you what you need.

It goes without saying that all of these modes, despite how computationally intensive they may be for the D5, work perfectly well at its full burst rate (not mirror lock-up mode).  And as someone who is used to 5fps bodies, the higher frame rate is something to behold. 

12 fps

After some quick and informal testing, I soon started to take 12 fps for granted. Slowing down the D5 in ‘Continuous Low’ mode to 6 fps to simulate a less sports-oriented body was torturous. Predictably, instead of getting a solid six-to-eight shots of a rider flying past me with wide-ish framing, I’d get maybe two or three. I was often left wanting an additional shot in-between the few that I managed to get, and because of this, I ended up trying to get just a single shot at the right moment and hoping that my timing worked out. It often didn’t. Back to 12 fps mode for me.

Following and focusing with single-point AF

But of course, 12 fps is useless if you can’t see what you’re shooting. The good news is that the viewfinder blackout is so short on the D5 even at 12 fps that I was able to pan and follow a fast-moving rider at a very close distance with ease. Nikon’s 3D Tracking worked well (more on that later), but because I could see so clearly in ‘real time’, using single-point continuous autofocus and just keeping a point over my subject was a completely viable option when panning and this approach netted a high number of ‘keepers.’ What’s more, the frame coverage of the D5’s autofocus array is so generous that I rarely felt compositionally constrained by picking a single point to keep over my subject.

Of course, for the sake of some variety, sometimes it’s best not to follow the action and just let it pass you by. Nikon 300m F4 PF | F5.6 | 1/500 sec | ISO 100

Group AF

Group AF on the D5 works similarly to single-point, but with the idea that a tight group of points will give you greater precision than just one point alone. The idea is great in principle and it usually worked well, but there were a handful of times where I let a part of the group stray off the rider, and the camera quickly readjusted to focus on the background. Part of this is probably due to to the fact that I had the AF system set up for ‘erratic’ subjects since 3D tracking and single-point worked so well in this mode, but in any case I tended to avoid Group AF for the rest of this shoot.

3D Tracking

One of the most exciting autofocus developments for DSLRs in recent years, Nikon’s 3D Tracking, worked as well as I have come to expect with only a single exception. When at wider focal lengths and attempting to initiate tracking on a rider at a distance, the D5 would usually just not be able to find my subject. The user manual reflects this though, saying that the camera collects color information from focus points surrounding the one you’ve chosen, storing that information and using it to initiate tracking.

So with a distant rider, the D5 was seeing mostly the dirt color, despite the bright colored clothing of my intended subject. In any case, if I let the subject get a little closer, or if I used longer lenses that produce inherently shallower depth-of-field, 3D Tracking proved itself to be pretty magical, constantly re-focusing and re-positioning the autofocus point in the viewfinder even when I was shooting at 12fps.

Auto Area AF

The last mode I experimented with was Auto Area AF, which is usually a mode that I tell people to avoid using. The D5 might just change my mind on that one. The camera was able to find a moving subject and hit it with anywhere from one to nine AF points almost every single time.

In the above series of (unedited) images, Auto Area actually directed the camera to focus on the background first. But then in the middle of that 12 fps burst, focus snapped to the rider flying through the air in front of me within two frames. I generally prefer a higher degree of control than Auto offers, but I can see this mode being genuinely helpful if you have milliseconds to get a shot and you don’t have time to place an autofocus point manually.

All those buttons

One of the best parts of the new D5 (and its sister model, the D500) is the level of button customization regarding autofocus modes. I am a back-button AF shooter, as I do sometimes like to pre-focus and wait for a subject to enter the frame without having to switch into manual focus. But even with the shutter button decoupled from any autofocus functionality whatsoever, I can assign AF-ON to be 3D Tracking, then assign the FN1 button on the front of the camera (under my ring finger) to switch to single-point continuous autofocus, and then also assign a full press of the AF joystick to switch into Auto Area mode.

So without even shifting my grip, I’ve got three different autofocus modes at my fingertips. This is incredibly handy as I often found myself changing AF modes depending on my lens, my position and the riders’ movement.

Having watched this rider come around this corner a number of times, I wanted to focus on just how much dirt he kicked up as he plowed through the scene. Having de-coupled autofocus and my shutter button, I pre-focused just behind where his rear tire is, shot a burst as he entered and exited the viewfinder with the tight framing I wanted and I didn’t have to worry about the focus shifting or missing (an admittedly minor concern with the D5). Daytime Long Exposure Photography Tips

There are two main categories of long exposure photography: images captured during the day and those that are taken at night. Although the techniques used to take these photos are largely the same, a number of differences also exist. This article talks about the techniques of taking daytime long exposures.

Use a neutral density (ND) filter

Neutral density filters are normally available in different stops. The type you choose really depends on how long the exposure needs to be and also on the brightness of the day.

Focus first

It will become nearly impossible to autofocus, especially if you are using a ND filter that is very dense. Sometimes, it may even be impossible to focus. The reason for this is that the ND filter will only allow a certain amount of light to pass through it, but your autofocus definitely requires more light for it to function. The same is also true for your eyes. This means that you will first have to remove the ND filter, compose, manually focus the shot, and then finally replace the filter and shoot. It is not advisable to use autofocus for this step, because your camera will attempt to refocus the shots after replacing the filter.

Make use of NDCalc

With this simple app (available for both Android and iPhone), it is possible to get the right exposure even with the ND filter attached. In order to use this tool, you need to use your camera’s meter to take a reading without ND filter. After that, inform the app of the exposure time that your camera got, as well as the type of ND filter that you are using. It will tell you the duration that exposure ought to be.

Take the best photos during the magic hour

The magic hours are times just before sunset and just after sunrise. Even with daytime exposure, it is still a lot better to take shots during the magic hours. This will give you better contrast against the clouds–something that will make the movements there appear more dramatic.

Have your goals in mind

The weather will not matter at all if you aim to capture the misty look of the water. However, if you intend to capture cloud movement, you need to be more careful in your choice of weather. You require a day that is partly cloudy with decent winds. If a day is fully overcast, forget about getting that beautiful streak appearance, as it will be too cloudy. On the other hand, a windless day is likely to offer you only scant sky movement.

With these four tips, you can trust that you will get the best daytime long exposure photography and get the best shots you have ever wanted.

Exactly like sunglasses, the amount of light is reduced and it enables you to use longer exposures for nice motion blur effects. ND filters are coming in various grades from lighter to darker and depending on that, they can reduce the camera settings from one stop to several.

The whole idea is to be able to have long time exposures during daylight hours which opens up many new opportunities.
